Instant Messaging

Instant messaging is like having your own private chat room on your computer. It’s simple and easy to use. Whenever a friend on your contact list is online at the same time as you, a message pops up on your screen. And with broadband you can then send messages to friends and family in real time. As well as sending messages it is also possible to send files to contacts while in conversations e.g. photos, school notes etc.

You’ll need an Instant Messaging program. With some of these you can only contact friends using the same program. But, there are other solutions available and the various providers are now looking towards allowing messaging across different programs.

Instant messaging is also very customisable. You can change your display name to whatever mood you are in, and with some programs you can also have a display picture which your contacts can view while you’re in a conversation with them.

If you feel that you can’t be bothered typing, it also possible to have a voice or even a videoconference – provided you have the correct hardware.
